Symphonia's Rising Stars final tonight

The stars are aligning over Tauranga Boys' College with the final of the Bay of Plenty Symphonia's Rising Stars Competition taking place tonight.

Preshow tickets sold like hotcakes and there's limited door sales for tonight's finals which sees six young finalists each performing a classical concerto accompanied by the Symphonia.

The six finalist are Bethlehem College's Phoebe Cho and Janet Reid, Tauranga Boys' College's Andrew Robinson, Tauranga Girls' College's Soomin Kim, and John Paul College's Jessie Colbert.

Their performance will by a panel of prestigious judges which is headed by musicologist and conductor Professor Peter Walls and also includes Rae de Lisle and Ben Hoadley.

Symphonia president Maggie gething says as the panel deliberates, 15-year-old violinist Anna Lee, who was the winning Rising Star in 2013.

'Anna has recently returned from making her debut in New York's Carnegie Hall and will be performing Wieniawski's ‘Légende' with the Symphonia.”

This year, and for the first time ever in the biennial competition's history, the Symphonia included a Composition category.

Tonight's concert will feature a performance by the orchestra of the winning piece ‘Warmth of Passion' which was composed by concerto finalist Soomin Kim.

Her composition was selected as the winner by a judging panel made up of prominent New Zealand composers Michael Norris, Alex Taylor and Martin Lodge.

Soomin's winning composition was described by the judges as ‘sophisticated', ‘harmonically adventurous', with ‘bold but well considered orchestration', and showed a ‘real flair for orchestral writing'.

Winners will be announced and prizes will be presented by Tauranga City deputy mayor Kelvin Clout.

The six finalists and the pieces they will play are:

  • Bethlehem College's Phoebe Cho (piano): Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.3, 3rd movement
  • John Paul College's Jessie Colbert (double bass): Dittersdorf's 2nd Concerto, 1st movement
  • Tauranga Girls College's Soomin Kim (piano): Grieg's Piano Concerto, 1st movement
  • Otumoetai Intermediate's Esther Lee (cello): Haydn's Cello Concerto No.1, 1st movement
  • Bethlehem College's Janet Reid (violin): Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, 1st movement
  • Tauranga Boys College's Andrew Robinson (clarinet): Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1, 1st movement.

The Bay of Plenty Symphonia's Rising Stars 2015 concert, conducted by Justus Rozemond, is on at Tauranga Boys College's Graham Young Youth Theatre tonight from 7pm.
