Longboarders take on Kopu-Hikuai Rd

Thrill-seeking longboarders who appear to have sped down a steep Coromandel road have police worried about their safety.

The latest slope of choice for Auckland-based "Crunchie" and his crew appears to be the Kopu-Hikuai Road.

Ans while police were glad to see the boarders in helmets and gloves, they were worried about what would happen if they came off, or a car came up behind.

A video uploaded to YouTube on August 29 shows at least three longboarders heading down the road:

At one point they're overtaken by a motorbike while cars, campervans and trucks fly past in the opposite direction.

The boarders wear helmets and gloves as they lean into corners on their way down the hill, but their wardrobe is distinctively street - one is shirtless, while another wears shorts.

It's not clear how fast they are travelling, but the video shows them crouching and, in some cases, getting speed wobbles.

Longboarding on the road was a grey area and it came down to safety, Waikato road policing manager Inspector Freda Grace said.

"I get the whole excitement, I get the whole thing. But how safe is it? Not very," she said.

"If you're using the road with a vehicle - a skateboard is a vehicle - then you are required to comply with the same rules and regulations as any other road user."

She was pleased to see helmets and gloves in the video but said the rest of the gear was unlikely to be enough to protect the vulnerable road users.

"That's just around the 'what if'. If they come off I'm assuming there's going to be some fairly significant injury," she said.

"Potentially they have got a safety vehicle behind them but we can't see that."

"Crunchie" did not want to comment when approached.

It's not the first time road longboarding videos have hit the headlines.

Waikato Police criticised longboarders in late 2014, after videos of a run on the Kaimai Range emerged.

But Swedish longboarder Anton Linden proved a social media hit when he uploaded a video of his New Zealand exploits in February 2015.

A video showing him riding down the Remarkables Skifield access road and a dawn downhill stretch in Christchurch has since been viewed more than 300,000 times.

Legal?

I saw one on the 23rd as well. Interesting they are legal road users? They are also wearing the same amount of safety gear as a cyclist. Actually, with gloves possibly more. I agree they are taking a risk and were moving quite quickly but are they are any more risk than a cyclist?

Legal

they are legally allowed to be there, and it looks like they are having fun. Just because a couple of wowsers think it looks dangerous doesn't mean it is. They look in more control than all the elderly folk driving their cars. it could be worse, they could be walking on your lawn or drawing on your fence.

Concern misplaced

Inspector Grace's concerns are well founded but would be better reserved for the aftermath when one of these boys is killed, because no doubt the Police will be blamed. As will the road, NZTA, current legislation, schools, John Key, TPPA, the flag debate, social media.......
