Serious message behind show

Baycourt Theatre and Kallo Collective are getting ready to present ‘Echolalia', created and performed by Jen McArthur.

Winner of Best Solo Show at the 2012 NZ Fringe Festival, ‘Echolalia' is a highly engaging solo performance that incorporates clowning, physical theatre and dance.

Coming to Baycourt's intimate X Space on Thursday September 10, for two shows only, ‘Echolalia'is an insightful, heart-breaking and humorous portrayal of life on the autistic spectrum.

In this clown theatre show, a young woman on the autistic spectrum prepares for a much-needed job interview and society's social norms are put under the spotlight,

Touching, surprising and hilarious, ‘Echolalia' is a highly recognisable portrayal of a person doing battle with their fears in a strange world.

It was through work on a school holiday programme for autistic children that Jen learned about and became inspired by autistic people.

She continues to do this programme every holidays and has done a lot of research into the lives of people with this type of brain.

The show is endorsed by Autism NZ and has been exceptionally well received, winning multiple awards and glowing reviews for its unique and breakthrough performances in New Zealand, Australia and Scotland.

Baycourt manager Megan Peacock Coyle is excited to be bringing the play to Tauranga.

'We saw a preview of Jen's ‘Echolalia' in Wellington in 2014, and have been hoping to present it here at Baycourt ever since,” explains Megan.

'It's such a beautiful, special show that will resonate with a lot of people, including children and families.”
