Western Bay colleges have featured strongly in this year's Bay of Plenty Under-18 squad and its proving successful.
From the squad of 30 named by Bay of Plenty Rugby Union's Under-18 coach Nick Leask – 18 students are from Western Bay of Plenty colleges.
Tauranga Boys' College led the way with nine students named in the squad, with Aquinas College, Bethleham College, Mount Maunganui College, Otumoetai College and Te Wharekura O Mauao all having two students each.
Eastern Bay of Plenty also had strong representation with eight students from three colleges selected from the area.
The Central Bay area had four students named in the squad with Western Heights High School having three students and Rotorua Boys' High School having one. A number of RBHS students were unavailable due to 1st XV commitments.
Nick has already gathered the squad members together and he says they are already showing some encouraging signs.
"The team are starting to develop a culture of hard work after a win against Thames Valley Under-19, 60-0, and an 8 hour longest day challenge.
'Players are starting to realise it is not about them, rather the team. The goal is to focus on one game at a time and implement the things we work on at training."
