Roundabout forest to go

What is rumoured to be the most over grown, forested and generally treed roundabout in the country's state highway network will be changing its look.

The change next week is in preparation for the start of earthworks on the Maungatapu roundabout.

The forested Maungatapu roundabout.

Other roundabouts have a tree or two near the middle. Some have low lying shrubs, or grass, and many are concrete. The Maungatapu roundabout has Mirkwood.

You cannot take a shortcut across the Maungatapu roundabout, or do donuts on the centre – because it is covered in dense bush. The forest hasn't just been left to its own devices, it's a deliberate action. Every now and then contractors have been glimpsed thinning out some of the nearly impenetrable undergrowth.

The New Zealand Transport Agency was unable to say if there are any other forested roundabouts on the state highway network.

The dark forest is expected to be gone from next week, cleared as part of the preliminary works for the Welcome Bay underpass project.

Earthworks begin next month, following the official sod turning ceremony, which is also expected to be scheduled next week, says the NZTA.

Meanwhile, six of the eight the houses from Hammond Street are gone. Two will be kept until later in the project for use as site offices.

'A 50km/h speed restriction, diversions and lane closures will be in place at Maungatapu while contractors clear vegetation and carry out other work in preparation for the construction of the Maungatapu underpass.

'The work will happen weekdays between 9am and 4pm to minimise disruption to traffic, says the NZ Transport Agency.”

If the tunnel is going under why do you have to get rid of the trees?

I was sorry to learn this news. Another victim of man v nature with progress. Already the mature trees(probably an imported variety), but non the less beautiful have gone, ugly stumps left to remind us that they existed. The cabbage tree grove and vegetation along the stream removed to make way for concrete and ashphalt. I guess the gums in the valley on the estuary side will disappear and maybe the bush on the left side. God bless the birds and creatures that will have to move into other areas and find a home. Yes I own a car and live in the area and will benefit from this progress but I am allowed to lament the loss of this Nature. I have enjoyed it for my 20yrs in Welcome Bay.

So they are now going to find mu little hut and long drop in the middle of the bush. Been there for 10 years, its so thick that no bad buggers have ever tried to get into the middle. Great lifestyle for ten years......... have to look somewhere else now, and quick.....

Why does the forest have to go if the tunnel is going under the roundabout? You know trees have roots that grow in the ground right? Anyway, the roundabout has awful visibility and you never know if some w*** in his skyline or Ferrari is coming around the corner at 100km because you will never see them coming.

Could be that the roots have grown down as far as the tunnel space...?

Man strikes again!

Forget about the birds, animals and insects that live here - ignore every other creature than man and chop it all down! Go for it guys, you are top of the food chain, you can do anything you want - to heck with all the other creatures that inhabit this earth, they have no voice, they mean nothing. Destroy their habitat - go right on ahead. You have the power.
