Five netted in meth sting

Methamphetamine, cannabis and other drug related items, along with $20,000 cash, were seized during a major drug bust in the Bay of Plenty.

Police officers from around the Bay where involved in yesterday's operation that targeted organised crime in and around Rotorua.

The raids resulted in the location of a clan lab capable of making large amounts of methamphetamine at a time.

Five people have so far been charged and one kilogramme of the precursor substance ephedrine and quantities of methamphetamine and cannabis have been seized. Firearms, ammunition, two stolen motorcycles and $20,000 cash were also recovered.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush says the major operation targeting methamphetamine in the Bay of Plenty yesterday underlines yet again police efforts to disrupt the drug trade and the gangs that run it.

'This operation was a great team effort, headed by Detective Senior Sergeant Lindsay Pilbrow and Detective Sergeant Kevin Morshead.

'It will put a dent in the Bay of Plenty methamphetamine trade and help prevent the dishonesty and other crime associated with illegal drugs.”

The Bay sting follows on from raids in Auckland on Wednesday where a drug dealing operation in the CBD was shut down.

Auckland Police arrested 14 people after a series of search warrants were executed this morning aimed at stopping drug dealing within an area of the CBD.

Up to 80 police executed the warrants on 10 addresses in the city centre as well as at properties in Te Atatu, Ranui and Manurewa.

Relieving field crime manager Detective Inspector Hayden Mander says the arrests were the culmination of a seven week investigation by the Auckland Police Organised Crime Unit.

'The team had been targeting an area around Hobson, Wellesley and Federal Streets over the last seven weeks following concerns raised by members of the public, local businesses and institutions.

"What they uncovered was alleged drug dealing on a wide scale, often aimed at vulnerable members of the community and conducted in clear view of the public.

'Police used a number of tactics to investigate the alleged offences, including the use of CCTV footage and plain clothed officers."

Hayden says police are now working with a number of the key institutions in this area of the city to try to prevent the alleged offending from resurfacing.

”The alleged drug dealing took place in and around a number of premises on Hobson and Wellesley Streets and Police will be working with the owners of those premises to ensure that medium and long term prevention strategies are put in place."
