Police clamp down on thefts

Waihi Police are asking members of the public to keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious activity after a number of thefts in the area.

Thieves have plagued the region in the last week with a laptop and a mountain bike just two examples of items stolen, reports Gold FM on their Facebook page.

An Acer Aspire laptop in a brown and dark blue bag was taken from a Victoria Street property sometime between Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Waihi Police Sergeant Aaron Fraser says the owner had unfortunately left his back door open, making the laptop an easy target.

'If anyone noticed someone walking around with a new Acer Aspire laptop in a browny-blue bag, let us know,” says Aaron.

Police are also looking for a mountain bike stolen from a car roof rack on Walnutt Avenue in Waihi Beach, last weekend.

The 29-inch specialised black Rock Hopper mountain bike has a distinctive red trim and police say it should be noticeable.

'There is someone wandering around the area, obviously at night, taking things,” says Aaron. 'So if you hear anything, let us know.”

Police have also dealt with a number of shop lifting reports and Aaron warns police will be taking steps to combat thefts.

People with information about suspicious activity are asked to contact Waihi Police on: 07 869 8179.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.
