Council clamp down on rubbish dumping

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is taking action to stamp out illegal dumping of household rubbish in rural areas of the region.

The amount of illegal rubbish being dumped at the end of various rural roads is costing hundreds of dollars each week.

'Household waste must be placed directly outside the property from which it originates – by your letterbox,” says a council statement.

'It is illegal to place any official bags or other rubbish at the end of rural roads, at a community hall or in a lay-by area.

'We regularly find several bags of rubbish at the end of Te Matai Road in Te Puke, Lund Road and Work Road in Katikati, Neewood Road and Rowe Road in Ohauiti and Maketu Road and Kelly Road in Maketu.”

Household rubbish is also being left at the bus shelter on Kaikokopu Road.

Under the Litter Act, individuals can be fined up to $5000 if convicted.

'If there is no kerbside collection going past your house on a rural road, it is your responsibility to organise a door-to-door pick with a private waste collector or to take the rubbish to a transfer station,” they add.

'Council plans to clamp down on offenders and will be monitoring these areas closely in the coming weeks.”

Phone your transfer station and ask about dropping off the city council brown plastic bag with handles. No charge to drop off. You pay when you buy the bag. I think there is a limit of one per person. Beware if you drive thru the transfer station the minimum charge is around $9. Phone them to find out.
