Tauranga MPs clash over TEL

Tauranga's NZ First MP Clayton Mitchell has clashed with Transport Minister Simon Bridges in Parliament over the recently completed Tauranga Eastern Link.

In a statement released this afternoon, Mitchell accused the minister of 'congratulating himself and the current government” for bringing the TEL project forward by 10 years.

According to Mitchell, however, Tauranga MP Bridges failed to mention the 35-year toll that the National Party have placed on the road.

'Given that the Government stated they would have funded the project in ten years, how can they justify tolling the people of Tauranga for 35 years?” asked Clayton.

'If the Government wants to place a toll on the road to help mitigate their costs, they could do so for 10 years, not 35.

'A 35 year toll will unnecessarily force Tauranga residents to pay for the project many times over.

'This Government is all rhetoric, pretending to give us something that in actual fact, we are giving ourselves.

'The Minister can applaud himself all he likes. I will reserve my applause for the people of Tauranga – the one's actually footing the bill.”

Bridges, who was prompted on the subject in parliament by Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller, dismissed Mitchell's claims as 'quite incorrect”.

'I'm happy to tell the member (Mitchell), who I know like myself lives in Tauranga, that after years of neglect, this government is delivering hundreds of millions of dollars of infrastructure projects to the people of the Bay of Plenty.”

In 2009, the New Zealand Transport Agency asked Bay of Plenty residents for their thoughts on tolling the TEL as part of the public consultation process, with more than 90 per cent in support of that option.

Provided a hell of a lot of pay checks in the bay over the last 8 years. I think these project keep a few more people in work during a trying financial time. How much money would not have hit the Bay economy had these project not happened throw in PSA and the BOP would have been a different place if not for this spend. Yes Clayton we have to pay from it ..Bigger Picture stuff here Please

Good staging there

between Nat MP's. But what an appalling shouting match from one of them. Doesn't give me much faith - "how you act speaks so loudly, people can't hear what you're saying". Never answered the Clayton question, did he.

Ignore the question

well done Clayton, I note that Simons answer totally ignored your question about the length of tolls.

Never as good as it sounds

I've driven the new TEL, and I must admit it is a great drive. However, it saves only 5 minutes and around four k's. Now firstly the government has a double bonus. It does not have to fund the existing through TePuke road as it has been handed back to council and it gets a toll on a road it has funded. The council should balk on accepting the TePuke road back as it still gets used quite a bit. I use the toll road when I am late to get to work in Rotorua, but go by the old road when I am coming home. What is five minutes. Government should delete the toll, and then the council should accept the old road back, but only if the toll is removed.

Not 10 years

Only five years, that is how much earlier it ended up being, that's all.

You go Clayton...

Why does Tauranga have to be hit by roading tolls, and everywhere else in New Zealand gets new roading projects done for free?? and the to add insult to injury we get charged for 35 years!!how is this fair - how about spending all the tax money collected from road user charges and petrol/diesel on our roads instead of wasting it on unrelated things

Actually 5 years Clayton

Posted on 26-08-2015 23:01 | By Murray.Guy

The deal was accept $100 million of tolling debt and we'll bring the project forward 5 years, NOT 10. This was at the request of the local authorities to enhance the crippling land holdings at Papamoa and Rangiuru. Clayton is quite correct in his assertions that the tolling regime should NOT extend beyond the original date. We certainly haver not been done any favours in our region being New Zealand's ONLY city that has it's main access routes tolled. In contrast we have $1.2 billion being spent in the Waikato with no tolls, a recent Taupo by-pass, NO tolls! Joke and reality is the eastern link to the Port is NOT complete until the flyover is done at Bayfair. If Simon Bridges is serious

Posted on 27-08-2015 08:12 | By mutley

about developing the transport network around Tauranga as he says, then he will press forward the upgrade of the road SH2 north of Tauranga to the same standard as TEL. Or was TEL chosen ahead of the northern route because it was so much easier to toll ??

When caught out

Posted on 27-08-2015 08:47 | By Merlin

Simon did not answer the length of tolls question as is the usual government ploy when it is caught out instead go into political rhetoric and hopes the question gets lost in all the false chest thumping.Wish this government would man up and answer questions properly.

Noddy Bridges...............

Posted on 27-08-2015 08:56 | By Smilarkie

............needs to stand back up in Parliment and correct himself. He said and I quote "the road will shorten the journey by 24 minutes". This is not the case. If you travel this road you will see large digital signs on the side of the road. They tell you the time to travel through Te Puke, and the time to travel the new highway. The diference is only 6 minutes, making a return trip saving of only 12 minutes. Where the hell does this clown get his figures??? and can he answer the question put to him. is the toll going to be on the road for 35 years??

It's a bit bloody different for the people of Welcome Bay isn't it...they bring the TEL forward 10 years, whilst the Welcome Bay tunnel is 8 years behind AND will be ineffectual, because the whole project is not to be done, with SH2a returning to Council hands....Ratepayers SHAFTED.

Simon did say 24 minutes return trip.

Whimpers Alternative

Posted on 27-08-2015 12:52 | By Watcher 1

Yes, it was to be 5 years of Tolls but surely "USER PAYS COMES IN" so for all the moaners there is an existing alternative FREE route still available via Te Puke so, if you do not want to pay the toll then use the Te Puke route. We are actually extremerly lucky here in N.Z.,Take a trip overseas where you will find heaps of roads tolled. The Point here is, if you don't wish to pay a toll for 5, 10 or 35 years use the Alternative route for FREE.

he said....

Posted on 27-08-2015 14:16 | By Smilarkie

....it would save 24mins on a round trip. Its only a 12 min saving on a round trip. What is so hard to understand.

Yes ratepayers have been shafted again. But this hardly the only time that ever happened. Welcome Bay are still waiting for the tunnel, TCC maybe in 30 years will do that may be .... Botched build at city hall, who knows what that will cost to fix but bet it will be $30m and some. There more ... to many to list here ...

Oh Simon...

Clayton Mitchell is basically correct but the time for the start of a Toll free road was 5years and thus would be starting in the next year or so.TEL was not a priority road nor of national significance so we should have waited. Yes the existing Papamoa to Te Maunga Highway needed upgrading urgently but it is not fair to say it forms part of the new TEL. Tolls for 35years is a bloody rort. WOFTAM

master?

They are building a road to welcome bay...but god only knows why, welcome bay is fine. since lights went in there has been no problems. you need to take a look at other areas like te puna that has no roading plans but has one of the biggest queues in the area for am peak.

Priorities

Posted on 29-08-2015 12:09 | By mikeperro1

I would only demand an upgrade to dangerous roads. Been over the Kaimai in winter? It's like driving on an ice rink. Why dont we have a tunnel through it? Oh wait, no use because the trucks are already tolled coming in and out of the docks. 'roads of national significance' really means 'roads we can make a heap of money on over a long period of time!'

Actually most days the sign says it saves you 4 minutes...

We've been had

Posted on 31-08-2015 09:07 | By Paul Melhuish

10 min time saving is just nowhere near 24 min. That's a problem. From what I can see, there is a lot more traffic on the Te Puke Road than there should be and if the TEL was living up to it's star billing it would be much busier than currently is. Looks like we've been taken for a ride folks. Time to find and hold accountable those making false claims about time savings that helped sell the whole idea to the people of the region in the first place.

I am NOT a Simon or National fan but

Posted on 31-08-2015 19:27 | By astex

let's get a perspective here. The time difference NOW is 5 to 6 minutes but when ALL the traffic went through Te Puke with the delays etc it actually DID take 10 to 15 minutes longer for the journey than it does NOW.

@ I Know

Posted on 01-09-2015 10:50 | By Paul Melhuish

I have been traveling this journey regularly for years and have tested both routes at many different times lately and the times are similar. Easily proven when you do the same two journeys yourself. They are unfortunately very close in time now due to not having as much traffic on the Te Puke road or in Te Puke township so it narrows the gap.. Drive it, time it and you will see. And remember that we were sold the TEL on the 12 to 13 minute time saving one way NOT 5 to 6 mins one way. That is something very easy to assess by engineers and be accurate but is very much wide of the mark in reality and amplified due to the road being tolled and you are paying for a quicker journey, which it only scrapes through in being. (A 110km/h limit could assist though)

Don'tdoubt you at all Paul Melhuish

A huge amount of spin and fabrication is 'par for the course', specifically in regards the costs benefit ratios and vehicle user numbers. Have you noticed that now the usage as settled to more realistic levels there is no longer the press releases on it's success. Exactly the same BS was adopted by TCC in regards the Route K Toll Rd in an effort to validate the construction commencement date and tolls. I asked staff how they arrived at the time saving figures and was advised they 'test drove', Route K and alternative routes in a city council car. They used a car to identify time savings for a heavy vehicle. Needless to say, there was NO time saving for large multi geared trucks. They responded by putting in a truck ban on Cambridge Rd and chicanes! Cost, $500,000.00

I fully agree with "iknow" comment. The TEL toll road is DEFINATELY faster than the old route thru Te Puke. Glad the road is finally finished. G (even now traffic fow is less thru Te Puke becaus of the TEL). Goodbye crawl thru Te Puke!

End of the Road

The unasked question is who really benefits from this road - who owns the land at the far end.....

More political drivel when there are far more pressing issues to be addressed. Shows how immature so many people in politics are.
