Tauranga man found dead in hotel

The man found dead in an Auckland hotel today after emergency services investigated a toxic smell has been named.

Mark Lawrence Ivil, who lived in Tauranga before being bailed to Auckland, was found dead after mixed chemicals formed a 'toxic gas” in the Grand Chancellor Hotel on Hobson Street.

Ivil had been facing 39 fraud-related charges after being accused of fleecing $4 million of other people's money last month.

His case, which was originally heard in Tauranga District Court, had been transferred to Auckland. Read more here.

It is understood Ivil was due to appear in court in Auckland earlier today.

St John ambulance spokeswoman Victoria Hawkins says the 58-year-old was in a critical condition and was undergoing decontamination by Fire Service staff, but died at the scene at 12.10pm.

Ambulance staff had assessed a further 10 patients at the scene who did not need to be taken to hospital.

Unconfirmed reports have suggested that the chemical involved was hydrogen sulfide.

It was too early to confirm whether it was a drug making operation, Fire Service assistant area commander Dave Woon says.

He admits authorities were unsure what chemicals were used, but that a number of different chemicals had been combined together.

Ivil escaped punishment and I feel for his family. Pedantically, 'sulfite' is the American spelling. It should be 'sulphite'
