Tami Neilson: dynamite lady

She's the only lady on tour with three 'stinky boys”, but when she lets out a big laugh you know the one and only Tami Neilson wouldn't have it any other way.

As part of the Church Tour 2015 this October, Tami and musical brothers Delaney Davidson, Barry Saunders and Marlon Williams will be performing at Holy Trinity Church on Friday, October 2.

This is definitely the show for fans of country, alt-country, spaghetti noir, country rock, rockabilly, western folk, Americana, honky tonk and everything else in between.

APRA Silver Scroll winner Tami says everyone's excited to be hitting the road and sharing stages with one and other.

'Where do I begin,” she says laughing. 'They're a fantastic group of guys and I'm quite honoured to be representing female country music artists.

'It's not like any other tour I've done, simply because of the venues. It's not every day you get to perform buildings which were built with music and voices singing specifically in mind.”

While it's easy to label the 30-something, Canadian-born singer/songwriter as a ‘country artist', it would be completely unfair to do so, as a number of elements are weaved through Tami's music.

She says her sound is a combination of equal parts country, soul and rockabilly, but is definitely more comfortable describing it as 'an era” rather than a specific genre.

'It's funny talking genres and being quite specific,' she explains, 'I guess my music is more of an era rather than a genre as I tend to hark back to the 1950s and 60s.

'Artist like Elvis, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison – in their day they blurred the lines between country, pop, rock n roll, gospel and rockabilly. They had all of those elements and weren't known for just being country or rock n roll.

'I think that's very similar to my music and the boys on this tour. The Church tour is very much going to be a melting pot of genres and quality music.”

Music has been a constant thread throughout Tami's life and she says she was singing well before she even learned to talk.

From a young age Tami was touring with The Neilson Family Band, performing alongside with parents Ron and Betty and brothers Jay and Todd, while sharing stages with big names like Johnny Cash and Loretta Lyn.

Tami also remembers how her dad Ron would sometimes pull her up on stage at the age of two to close his stand-up comedy routine.

'I'd be singing things like ‘The Alphabet Song' and ‘How much is that doggy in the window' – classic hits, which of course I will be performing during this upcoming tour,” she jokes.

When Tami speaks of Ron it's as clear as day how much she adored and respected her father – even her first recorded song at the age of nine was an ode to the man and titled ‘You're The Best Dad'.

Her new album Don't Be Afraid, which is due for release ahead of The Church Tour, also pays homage to her father, who passed away in February of this year.

'Dad was a huge foundation for my music and being a musician,” she adds. 'Don't Be Afraid was written in the aftermath of losing him and so many of the songs are co-written with him.

'I found a lot of old demos of his that my brother Jay and I worked on and wrote for the album. It's an album to celebrate the legacy that he's passed on to me.

'Musically it keeps him alive and really sharing what a wonderful and amazing person and musician he was. The best way to do that is by singing his songs.”

Tami can't wait to hit the road and do what she loves doing most, and is also looking forward to reconnecting with her 'musical brothers” Delaney Davidson, Barry Saunders and Marlon Williams.

The quartet will perform in eight churches across the country and each show will run in two halves, with each artist performing a set on their own, backed by a house band.

But audiences can also expect all four artists to jump in and out of each other's sets throughout the night, says Tami.

'Delaney and I co-wrote a song called ‘Whiskey & Kisses' which is a duet we never get to perform together because we're rarely in the same country,” says Tami.

'Usually I perform it with a member of the band, so it's pretty special that we'll get it perform it together on tour.”
