Suspicious package found in Greerton

UPDATED 10am: Fire Service officials have confirmed that the suspicious substance found at Greerton Post Office this morning has been handed over to police for identification.

Scene commander Aaron Waterreus says the situation is now under control, however the Post Office remains closed to the general public despite fire personnel vacating the scene.

Members of the public are being asked to avoid Chadwick Road after a suspicious package was found at the Greerton Post Office this morning.

Three fire trucks and one hazmat vehicle are at the scene where two members of the public have come into contact with a package containing a powdery white substance.

Aaron Waterreus from the Fire Service says the two members of the public will have to be decontaminated. This is done by using showers that will be set up at the scene.

'We are asking people to avoid using Chadwick Road, between Cameron Road and Greerton Road,” he says.

Aaron could not confirm what the substance is at this stage.

Emergency services have been called to the Post Office in Greerton this morning following the discovery of a suspicious package.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says police and fire service are in attendance at the scene and are currently dealing with the incident.

The exact nature and contents of the package is unclear at this stage .

People are being asked to avoid the area until the emergency services have cleared the scene.
