Weather: A week of two halves

The MetService is picking Tauranga's weather will only get worse before it gets better.

A front will move north over New Zealand during Monday and Tuesday bringing rain, before clearing the country on Wednesday. "Most places will get wet weather with this front, but the second half of the week is looking mainly dry," says Metservice

Meteorologist Stephen Glassey. On Monday, rain spreads onto the South Island and lower North Island, with the heaviest falls in western areas. A cold southerly change behind the front is also expected to bring brief snow to 400 metres in parts of Southland and Otago.

Tuesday will be the wettest day for the North Island, while the rain gradually clears from most South Island places. A ridge of high pressure builds over New Zealand during Wednesday and Thursday, clearing the rain from the North Island and leaving fine weather for most areas. However, another front approaches from the Tasman Sea during Friday. "This will likely bring a return to rain on the weekend," says Glassey.

Tomorrow's forecast for Tauranga is cloudy periods with the chance of showers and Northerlies. The MetService is also predicting a high of 15C and 10C overnight. Tuesday has a high of 16C with the chance of heavy rain expecting to ease later in the afternoon.

Wednesday is more showers clearing early with South easterlies developing and a high of 17C. Thursday is the pick of the days with a high of 15C fine with light winds.
