Pitching for more seats

Just eight months after Tourism Bay of Plenty's board was trimmed from eight members to six, they are now pitching for more seats.

In a decision later backed by Western Bay of Plenty District councillors, Tauranga City councillors cut board numbers in January this year.

Another board member resigned in May this year, leaving chairman Ian Smith unsure about their ability to guarantee a quorum of four at future meetings.

Toursim BOP's real name is The Western Bay of Plenty Tourism and Visitors Trust, and was originally established back in April 2002.

The board's trust deed states that the number of trustees comprising the board shall not be less than six nor more than eight.

The May resignation brought the number of board members below the minimum threshold and a recruitment process was initiated.

Applications closed on July 24, and the appointment panel is currently carrying out interviews.

As chair of Tourism BOP's board, Ian has raised concerns about the number of trustees on the board and explained how, with other work commitments, it has been difficult at times to ensure a quorum at meetings.

Councillors from both TCC and WBOPDC have agreed that increasing the number of board members is an appropriate matter to consider as part of the current recruitment process.

The joint governance committee is expected to vote on the issue at its meeting today.

When the decision was made in January 2015 to reduce the number of trustees, then board chairman Paul Bowker expressed concern that it would likely create difficulties.

No seat warmers, obviously the entire idea of 'reducing' numbers is a totally foreign concept for any bunch of bureaucrat's vocabulary. It has taken around six months to formulate a plan to come back at the pummbled Councilors with an attack plan to reinstate the numbers, perhaps if as much attention was directed at Tourism then Tauranga's tourist industry would eclipse Rotorua? Well yeah right "TUI ADVERT".
