Panel reveal top 40 flags

The Flag Consideration Panel have revealed the final 40 designs selected for further investigation as part of the official design review process.

Flag Consideration Panel chair, Professor John Burrows, says the panel's been guided that: 'A potential new flag should unmistakably be from New Zealand and celebrate us as a progressive, inclusive nation that is connected to its environment, and has a sense of its past and vision for its future.”

The panel selected the final 40 from 10,292 designs suggested.

They believe the preliminary selection of designs best represent the range of suggestions it has received.

'It is important that those designs are timeless, can work in a variety of contexts, are simple, uncluttered, balanced and have good contrast,” adds Professor Burrows.

'We would like to thank everyone for their design suggestions and we've been impressed with the very high standard.

'The Panel made a unanimous decision and selected flag designs we believe best reflect New Zealand's identity, as shared with us in the values and themes that New Zealanders expressed throughout this process.”

The designs will be subject to further robust checks and verification, including intensive intellectual property review, to ensure designs are workable and that there are no impediments for them moving forward.

Under its terms of reference, it is now the panel's responsibility to determine the final four alternative flag designs.

'As you will appreciate, the panel must remain neutral and unbiased,” explains Professor Burrows.

'We will be taking into account a number of factors including design, practicality and technical considerations and will announce the four alternatives by mid-September.”

Eligible voters will then rank these four alternatives in the first referendum later this year.

The long list of potential designs can be viewed at: www.flag.govt.nz

Awesome, some nice looking designs in there. Bring on the referendum, time for change!

We need everyone to

show this fiasco is a waste of time and money by NOT VOTING. Then maybe the second referendum will be stopped and, at least, half of the millions of dollars can be saved.

Nope!!

Posted on 10-08-2015 17:40 | By How about this view!

Just change the colours on the existing flag to make a point of difference with Australia.

Am I the only one asking 'what is wrong with our current flag?' Seems like a total waste money that could be put back into our country on more important things!!!

Still a waste of money

The $26 million could be better spent on more urgent needs to benefit New Zealander's.The referendum is wrong way round designed to get more support against the current opinion.

What a load of garbage picking 4 from that collection would be a real challenge.Put them up against the existing flag now and all their votes would not reach 20% combined while the current flag would get 80%+.WOFTAM

Hilarious

If the purpose was to produce a blurry mess that makes you feel dizzy, and will be unrecognisable on a flag in a slight breeze, then i think most succeed. Was there a minimum use of colour and shapes on the criteria or are the inventors all on drugs? Less is more...

OMG

What is the cost of this foolish exercise going to be ? we have people, children living in poverty and a affordable housing shortage and we are worried about a flag ? I suppose when you have a house that you can fly the new flag over nothing else matters, a load of bollocks

The cost is said to be $26 million and that is just to run the referendum. If that results in a change then all official flags, letters, around the world will have to change, at every embassy, council and more, the lot. Looks like this is more of an ego thing of distracting the uninformed public of more important things happening elsewhere.

FLAG IT !

40 of the best? Apart from about two 'maybes', the rest are absolute junk. Please stop this farce now!

Yes must vote

Posted on 11-08-2015 13:10 | By Ellajj

We must vote....I'll be voting with a NO against every design. Then t least I'll be getting my point of view across. I think it's strange that none of them keeps the Union Jack...I wonder if that's the first step towards wanting to move away from the Sovereignty. They'll be saying "we don't even have the Union Jack on our flag...." Some people don't understand the importance of history!

Go away new flag.

Disappointing

Posted on 11-08-2015 14:07 | By Bay Citizen

Some good ones, but too many silver ferns, too many koru and some with too much white. Disappointing that not one keeps the union jack (except for one bastardized version of it), which ought to be an option even if Maori elements are added elsewhere on the flag. Oh well, at least it makes the choice in the second referendum simple.

I dont think so

Has anyone calculated the TOTAL COST of this flag farce. NOT $26mil, but probably 10 times that. The whole world has to be adapted because a couple of politicians probably got bored and came up with this bright idea to be remembered by . Leave those drugs alone man

Yes, it struck me that none of them kept the Union Jack and you are correct about history. It's as if many Kiwis want to reset the clock and start from now. Forget the past. It also screams of insecurity. It's all part of the 'look at us on our own, punching above our weight' brand nonsense that Key and Co are forever pushing. You are what you are New Zealand - embrace your history, culture and small part in the world. It is ironic that Key is obsessed with brand and NZs image overseas but changing the flag to anything without the Union Jack will actually diminish the image to many overseas, particularly America. Like it or not, the connection to Great Britain still carries weight around the world.

Don't change our flag.

Posted on 11-08-2015 16:00 | By dgk

If those are the 40 best ones, then we don't need to change the flag as we already have one that shouts New Zealand.

40 of the best

Looks like the worst to me, worse and get more so. That makes the decision easy now right. So why not just stop now, end it all over rover.

MUST VOTE! BUT VOTE NO!

Posted on 13-08-2015 09:11 | By Kiwis

Don't not vote.... vote no. Although not voting is a great form of protest, it may not be "listened" to, whereas a NO vote has to be. This entire process is a total waste of money, money that could be better spent on our healthcare, education & justice systems - all of which are featuring more & more in our daily news as failing in a major way. Not to mention that by changing our flag we are disrespecting those that have served our country.

NO one would seriously believe any of these are an advance on the present flag. Who said we needed one anyhow. Are we really that weak we would go with this one person crusade. First a real reason to change then a genuine national interest shown to support it. Vote no to these is my answer.

RSA is right in saying....

Posted on 14-08-2015 20:36 | By ROCCO

Keep the current flag and on the referendum sheet cross out the 4 handpicked flags chosen by the 'bozo' panel and write in words "the current flag".Should do the trick.

Yes....totally agree! Must vote....but must vote no!

Not Voting Is NOT an OPTION

Posted on 15-08-2015 17:40 | By carpedeum

I am not at infavour of changing the flag at all - but trying to be open minded- if I had to I COULD accomodate the thought of ADDING a Silver Fern to the EXISTING FLAG in the space where Ausralia have their extra BIG STAR-that could suit all parties to this debate??

MONEYWASTER

Posted on 17-08-2015 17:29 | By CONDOR

Vote NO to this rubbish and the obscene KEY orientated $27 million aberration. Most of these flags are rubbish.

Common theme

Posted on 17-08-2015 19:26 | By Kenworthlogger

They are trying to rewrite history here by taking out the Union flag. Our history is British thankyou...

Just throwing this into the mix

Posted on 17-08-2015 21:46 | By astex

The silver fern is not unique to NZ and is found all around the world. It is also easily confused with a white feather. A black flag signals plague. So, who wants a white feather of cowardice on a plague flag?

Carpedeum......

Posted on 17-08-2015 23:33 | By Ellajj

Funnily enough I thought exactly the same thing! I thought if they add the silver fern, which is recognized world wide to be associated with sports people from NZ. Keep the southern cross . Keep the Union Jack . All aspects of NZ covered. Also, it means that all the existing flags can be used, just add the silver fern. Perfect! It would be interesting to see how many people would like that design if it was included in the top 40. Are there any readers against the changing of the flag that would consider this design ?

Petition....

Posted on 23-08-2015 06:31 | By Ellajj

Did you know? If you go to change.org there's a petition against changing the flag with 35,000 supporters so far... I've signed and now I'm sharing....

The reason

Posted on 07-09-2015 13:45 | By Feruno

that a new flag is required is from the ( arrogant ) horses mouth . MISTER Key is annoyed because he has been featured in front of an Aussie flag by mistake . Check out his :speech " on YouTube . So now we have to bust our backsides to PAY more money .
