'Les was a valued and generous member of our organisation and a frequent visitor to the museum,” says Classic Flyers ceo Andrew Gormley.

'He was always happy to spend time with anyone and chat about his amazing flying career.

'Only recently he even enjoyed another trip in our Boeing Stearman.”

Les died in Tauranga hospital on Tuesday morning after a short illness. He was 96.

The former Dambuster Pilot flew Lancaster bombers and received combat medals for bravery. He also received peacetime honours for his work in local government in the King Country.

'It was Les' wish that his funeral ceremony was to be held at Classic Flyers,” adds Andrew.

'All are welcome to join us in remembering Les' life and sharing time with his family and friends.”

Les's medals include the post war New Zealand civil honours, Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, and Queen's Service Order.

His war medals include service honours, and the Distinguished Service Order and Distinguished Flying Cross. The DSO was awarded in March 1943 and the DFC in June of the same year.
