Police officers beyond the uniform

Have you ever wondered what police do in their spare time?

A recently released video gives insight into officers when they are not walking the beat.

Earlier this year acting deputy commissioner Grant Nicholls asked members of staff how they spend their time away from policing.

The response was overwhelming – hundreds of members of staff sent in photos, video clips and words illustrating a mind-boggling range of interests, from aerobatics to zoology.

'We initally planned to create one video that would be used in a variety of ways,” says Grant.

'But the interest shown by hundreds of willing staff proved that one video wouldn't do it justice.”

So Beyond the Blue has grown into an ongoing project which will run across a range of formats and channels, from videos on police's Youtube channel, to stories in the Police magazine Ten One, on the Police intranet and website, to social media posts on Facebook, Instagram and elsewhere.

'Though many police officers wear a uniform, we're far from uniform in what we do when we're not at work,” says Grant.

'These responses – and the ones which are still coming in - give a fascinating glimpse into the people who make up police.”

there is too much "Beat" walking going on for the water-skier. Maybe he was a judge in the recent Bakels National pie-makers competition? I know how difficult it is for officers to find outside activities for their leisure time and it often becomes a solitary activity or pass-time as they CAN find it difficult to interact with people that they don't know, particularly as they may have or have-had other interactions that may not have gone too well. Well done lads, you're doing a great job!
