Six stars rising this September

It's nearing crunch time for the six talented young musicians competing in the Bay of Plenty Symphonia's Rising Stars 2015 competition.

Each finalist, accompanied by the orchestra, will perform a movement from their chosen concerto during the Symphonia's concert at Tauranga Boys' College on September 4.

Symphonia president Maggie Gething says the works to be played are mostly classics of the repertoire and will be well known to music lovers.

The six finalist are Bethlehem College's Phoebe Cho and Janet Reid, Tauranga Boys' College's Andrew Robinson, Tauranga Girls' College's Soomin Kim, and John Paul College's Jessie Colbert.

'Their performances will be judged by a panel of prestigious judges headed by Peter Walls ONZM,” says Maggie.

'While the panel deliberates, 14-year-old violinist Anna Lee, who was the winning Rising Star in 2013, will perform Wieniawski's Légende with the Symphonia.”

For the first time ever in the biennial competition's history, the Symphonia included a Composition category.

The upcoming concert will feature a performance by the orchestra of the winning piece ‘Warmth of Passion' which was composed by concerto finalist Soomin Kim.

Winners will be announced and prizes will be presented by His Worship the Mayor of Tauranga, Stuart Crosby.

The Bay of Plenty Symphonia's Rising Stars 2015 concert, conducted by Justus Rozemond, is on at Tauranga Boys College's Graham Young Youth Theatre on Friday, September 4, from 7pm.
