‘As You Like It’ auditions

'All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players,” penned Shakespeare in his classic comedy As You Like it.

Local company Twice As Good Productions is inviting actors to audition for its next Summer Shakespeare production of As You Like It which will be staged at the Te Puna Quarry next year.

Auditions for the show start this Saturday and Sunday in Omokoroa, from 10am to 4pm.

The third and final auditions will be held at the Te Puna Hall on Tuesday, August 4 from 6pm to 9pm. Call backs have been scheduled for Saturday, August 8.

The upcoming production follows on from the Twice As Good Production's sold-out season of A Midsummer's Night Dream which was staged at the quarry earlier this year.

Founder and internationally trained actor and director Suzy Sampson says the company is after local actors, musicians and volunteer stage hands to bring the classic tale to life.

'As You Like It is one of my favourite plays and I've worked on productions of the show in Hong Kong and London,” says Suzy. 'I'm very familiar with the play and it is set in the Forest of Arden, so it's perfect for an outdoor setting like the Te Puna Quarry.

'We're really looking forward to the show next year. January is great fun because we have rehearsal on my front lawn which is right next to the sea, it's the perfect spot.”

'These auditions are open to everyone, so if you're a lover of Shakespeare come have a go.”

About 16 people will form the main cast and there's a mix of large, medium and small roles available. Roles will not necessarily be gender specific.

Suzy is also keen to hear from anyone who is wanting to gain some experience behind the scenes and would be interested in volunteering as a stage hand.

Music also features heavily within As You Like It, and with the show being set in the 17th century, the music will have a classical flavour.

'It's not just incidental music to be played between scenes,” adds Suzy, 'so we require a few musicians and anyone who can play an instrument will be most welcomed.

'The play will be set in the 17th century, so we'll be looking at a classical flavour – violins, flutes maybe, anything in that genre.”

Rehearsals for As You Like It will begin in October, with a three week break over the Christmas and New Year's holiday period. The show will be on stage from late January to early February.

Auditions take place on August 1 & 2 in Omokoroa, and on August 4 at Te Puna. For more information or to book a time email Suzy Sampson at: info@twiceasgoodproductions.com or visit: www.twiceasgoodproductions.com
