Maori language: Our future?

I am wondering what is the point of the article in which Ellis Byers states ‘I am Maori.' (The Weekend Sun, July 24). Quite frankly, who cares?

I can state that I, along with 85% of the population in New Zealand, I most definitely, am not Maori but am just as proud of my European heritage as he seems to be of whatever amount of Maori blood Byers has in his veins.

I note he goes to the beach each morning to pray to his Maori ancestors. With a name like Ellis Byer, he obviously has European or other blood within. Does he pray to those ancestors as well?

He might offer a prayer of gratitude to British ancestors for the fact that he is living in a peaceful democratic country and able to air his views due to the British answering
the requests of Maori elders to Queen Victoria begging her to send troops to put
a stop to intertribal fighting, cannibalism and possible extinction of Maori.

The 85 per cent of non-Maori landing on these shores all bring their own very special cultures which they share and which enrich us.

We respect Maori culture but I, for one, am not interested on pretending to be part
of it. I will not say ‘Kia Ora' to my friends but Hello, and I strongly object to the likes of Byers trying to thrust his Maori views down my throat. We certainly need to know the history of this country, but the real truth, not the whitewashed stuff that is being dished out to students today.

The most important thing is that we are New Zealanders, and I am proud to be one.

lets be honest

Lets be honest here: maori culture in 1840 was light years inferior to european culture. Most of the present day maori culture is made up...for example maori have reinvented themselves as conservationists, yet the native birdlife ( eg Moa) was decimated by a stoneage "see it, kill it" mentality.

Yes it was, the fate of the Moa and other unique wildlife says it all about what happened at the time. There is little reason to think that much has changed when you have for example the problem of the Kereru as happened in Northland recently. The fate is likely similar because the mindset is unchanged.

The difference is the european does not pretend they were good conservationists since theyear dot. Whereas the maori pretend they were and "modern " maori history books have all but done away with the bloodthirsty truth and replaced with lies that is then used in the brainwashing of all teachers, government employees, children and tourists.

@those who believe they are superior

You cared enough about this article to write a letter, a long one stating your own views, prejudices, contradictions, untruths and old arguments. Maori were cannibals just in case you may have forgotten. One article about Ellis Bryers personal preference does not equate to trying to thrust his Maori views down your throat. And Ian... Celtics were obviously inferior since they never survived to claim this land, your argument has no substance...and nobody cares. And so lets be honest...in 1840 Maori excelled at business and international trade but by far their superiority was trench warfare (hence the treaty) yet the most simple feat over English was that Maori knew to bathe regularly and not with the same water used by the entire family. Research your own history of savagery, masacre, cannibalism, colonisation (yes Europeans were colonised) than you might find you only have yourselves to judge.
