NZ's communication breakdown

While I have great respect for the Maori people and their history, I have no desire to learn their language nor greet my friends with Maori words.

It's not my culture and Ellis Bryers must understand that. Let the Maori enjoy their own culture but don't try and force it on non-Maori. Why does it concern Ellis that we all have to greet in Maori or learn their language? Live and let live – it's another case of interference in peoples lives.

If given a choice of a language I would choose one that is useful and spoken in other parts of the world, rather than a language that is not spoken outside of New Zealand and is indigenous to Maori.

It's a pointless exercise when all Maori can speak English. This is using others to keep alive a native language and for what purpose?

If a non-Maori wishes to learn Maori then it's their choice. When we start taking choices away we begin a descent into dictatorship. A minority of the population dictating to the majority is ludicrous and arrogant. If people want to learn the Maori culture nothing is stopping them, let them do it of free will.

It is out of hand in schools where kids must spend hours practicing hakas and pronunciation of maori names etc, at the expense of a proper education. The maorification of NZ is seeing us drop to third world status.

No surprise really Captain

The drop in standards in New Zealand schools and so Universities results from imposing quotas on students, that means better students are left out and others less capable are allowed in. Merit has gone west. End result the average academic grade drops at the time of entry. Then on the grading is all about getting the under achievers through to the other end no matter what, the results of a large drop in New Zealand University rankings in the world of a large drop over a few decades reflects this change. The results can not be denied, neither can the cause. South Africa is perhaps 25 years ahead of us on this, the Universities there were world recognized but not now, they have disappeared off the rankings completely. The reasons are the same.

What is European culture?

An article on Ellis Bryers does not equate to forcing you to learn Maori culture, could you be more self centred? Your letter is far from 'great respect for Maori culture', apply 'live and let live' to yourself as clearly you felt the strong need to reassert your rights as a non-Maori and citezen of NZ. And as for MISS ADVENTURE and sidekick Captain, thats National policies your complaining about, its the John Keyification of NZ and selling NZ to overseas investors that seeing us drop to third world status. The whole 'blame Maori' for our dilemma as a country and an education system is rubbish and defamatory.
