Gags, girls and gigs

Guy Williams has had a bad year. He's been blocked by Sonny Bill Williams on Twitter, struggled to find a balance between work and a social life – and he's out of love.

His upcoming New Zealand tour isn't off to the best start either. He's hired his brother as his manager for the Guy Williams Going to Places National Tour that only goes to Napier, Tauranga and Rotorua.

'He doesn't have a job at the moment so I employed him as my manager,” laughs Guy, 'and so far he's done a very poor job. It's a disaster as he's booked a three-gig national tour, but hopefully we'll add more dates soon.”

This will be his redemption tour – a search for gigs and for girls.

The Williams' brothers come to Tauranga on August 9 for Guy's comedy show at Tauranga Boys' College's Graham Young Youth Theatre from 7pm to 8pm.

'It's about me trying to pull my life together and get better at it,” he admits. 'So far it's been going very badly. It's almost like a self-help seminar as much as it is a comedy show.”

He'll try to regain his friendship with Sonny Bill after tweeting a joke about the cross-code superstar's boxing career.

'He didn't take it well,” says Guy, 'and I'm devastated now that I can't follow him on Twitter or write anything to him.”

The 27-year-old's New Year's resolutions are to start referring to Beyonce as ‘B' so people think they're friends, to become the New Zealand avocado ambassador, to work less and to find a girlfriend.

'I really struggle with dating because, well, I'm a terrible person,” he says. 'But I'm becoming a better person and this tour is a good opportunity for me to maybe meet some ladies.”

The Nelson-born comedian has been to Tauranga twice before – once with fellow comedian Rose Matafeo about four years ago, and a second time to Club Mount Maunganui last November.

'It's always a really fun place to do shows in Tauranga,” says Guy. 'They're always very receptive. Tauranga's always keen to laugh at itself so it's always good fun.”

So what does Tauranga find funny?

'That's a good question,” says Guy. 'I always feel like Tauranga is quite like Nelson – it's got quite a high retirement community so I always poke fun at that.

'There's a lot of National voters so it's always quite fun to make fun of John Key, who is obviously a very easy target with his pony tail pulling these days.

'Also it's got the young community of surfer bros, which I always think is pretty funny.”

We'll be the judge of Guy's gags when he comes to Tauranga on August 9. In regards to girls, we suggested putting his number at the bottom of this article. Guy was all for it.

Guy Williams Going to Places National Tour is at Graham Young Youth Theatre at Tauranga Boys' College on Sunday, August 9, from 7pm to 8pm.
