Woman seriously injured in SH2 crash

A woman has been seriously injured after her car crashed through a fence and into a paddock on State Highway 2 near the Karangahake Gorge this morning.

Waikato District Command Centre senior sergeant Gillian Meadows says the crash occurred near the southbound passing lane coming out of Paeroa sometime before 7.50am.

'It would appear that there was one injured female who sustained Status 2 injuries as a result of the crash.

'Police, Fire and Ambulance crews attended the crash and it would appear that she was the sole occupant in the vehicle.”

Gillian adds traffic management is currently in place at the site of the accident, but could not confirm if the Karangahake Gorge was closed.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Dallas Ramsay says the injured woman has since been transported to a landing zone at the Paeroa station and will be airlifted to hospital.

This stretch of road is fine if you respect the road conditions. I have driven this route hundreds of times over the years.

Plenty of Warning Signs

Having lived near this "crash site" for many years - I can confirm that most of the accidents on this section of road are a result of speed, distraction, overtaking errors and bad driving - there is significant signage to warn of the sharp bend and this signage has been established due to the number of deaths over the years - People need to slow down, pay attention, be alert and avoid overtaking on dangerous corners
