Police say initial enquiries indicate the logging truck lost control and crashed with a ute resulting in the death of one man in the ute.

'A woman from that ute is in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital and a child from that ute is expected to be discharged after assessment. Ages are still to be confirmed,” says a statement from police.

'A log which fell from the truck struck a second ute and a woman from that vehicle is in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital.”

The truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was not admitted.

A serious crash investigation is underway to establish the cause of the crash.

It was raining at the time but it is too early to say if the weather was a factor.

Pete Kelly, when you know all the facts of how trucks run this wonderful country of ours, keep your comments to yourself! If you want the rail to cart logs, how are you going to get them out of the forests, and what about the local sawmills, like Waipa, Rotorua Sawmill, Donellys and the soon to start up Lumbercube, how are they going to get logs? No rail going to their front doors pal! Have you ever been in a logging truck or any truck before? I invite you to come and ride shotgun with me for a day and see what these "Overloaded" trucks actually do in a day. Don't be shy now!

People like "Trev" show the ignorance of the general public when it comes to trucking. Any idiot would surely realise trains are dinosaurs and cant match a modern logging truck. Next he will whinge when some one gets killed trying to beat the train!!. Trev should realise that trucks are more safe than cars and the stats show that trucks do more kms a year safer than cars do..

Safe kilometers
