UPDATED 5.40pm: One person has died and four others have been injured in a crash on State Highway 30 involving a logging truck and two other vehicles.
The crash occurred at about 1.25pm at Horohoro.
Police are investigating a fatal crash in the Eastern Bay.
Police say initial enquiries are indicating that a fully laden logging truck lost control and collided with a ute resulting in the death of one man in the ute.
A woman from that ute is in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital and a child from that ute is expected to be discharged after assessment.
Ages are still to be confirmed.
A log which fell from the truck struck a second ute and a woman from that vehicle is in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital.
The truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was not admitted.
A serious crash investigation is underway to establish the cause of the crash.
It was raining at the time but it is too early to say if the weather was a factor.
SH30 was closed between Atiamuri and Rotorua while a serious crash investigation is carried out and the road is cleared. it has since been re-opened.
This includes the need to remove a number of logs from the road.
A short time earlier, at about 12.30pm, a car collided with a truck on SH5 at Wairakei.
One female from the car has been taken to hospital with suspected serious injuries.
A road closure was put in place while the scene was examined and the vehicles recovered.

A lot of logging truck drivers have never heard about centrifugal force.
