Wave buoy back in water

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council wave buoy is back on station and in the water after a five month absence.

The buoy, which is normally sited 13km off Pukehina beach, was removed from the water earlier this year after it developed a fault in the component that measures wave height, period and wave direction.

And it proved a challenge to fix, meaning the buoy was out of action for a lot longer than expected.

'The reasons for the significant delay are due to us trying to reproduce the fault that occurred when it was deployed on the water,” says Council Data Services Manager Glenn Ellery.

'It was very difficult to reproduce. Once we had finally identified it we had to wait for some parts to be delivered from the manufacturers in Canada.

'We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

'Recent calm sea conditions have allowed us to redeploy the buoy.”

The wave buoy monitors and records information about wave heights, water temperature and wave frequency.

It is popular with boaties and surfers in the region, and its data can be viewed live on the council's website.
