Highway open after serious crash

No-one was injured when a car rolled on State Highway 2, between Paeroa and Waihi this morning.

The highway at Waikino has now open after being closed for a short time around 7am.

Three men have escaped injuried when the car they were travelling from Tauranga to Auckland in skidded off the road.

"It looks like they lost it in the wet and rolled on the road," says Waihi Fire Chief Moe Stevens.

The car had gone partially off the road, and emergency services blocked one lane of the highway for about an hour while rescuing the men.

Moe says signs were put up at either end of the gorge to warn motorists. A tow truck was being brought in to remove the car.
