PM echoes commitment to open NZ

Prime Minister and Leader of the National Party John Key today reiterated the National-led Government's commitment to an open economy which embraces free trade and immigration.

Speaking at the National Party Annual Conference in Auckland, Mr Key outlined a series of changes to immigration settings to ensure regional New Zealand benefits from the skills, labour and capital that migrants bring to the country.

'Our future is in being open to the rest of the world, in connecting with other countries and making the most of those linkages,” Mr Key says.

'We welcome migrants who can make a contribution to New Zealand, and we value the benefits and opportunities that free trade agreements can deliver.

'I back our farmers, our manufacturers, our ICT companies and in fact all our exporters to succeed.

'If we can get an equal crack at all markets we are up there with the best in the world.”

Mr Key says the changes to immigration settings will help spread the benefits of migration across the country, particularly in those regions which require workers, skills and investment.

Mr Key also said the New Zealand economy is well-placed to deal with global challenges, with many sectors performing strongly and with exports boosted by a lower Kiwi dollar.

'Our view of New Zealand is a positive, confident country that is well connected with the rest of the world, including our neighbours in the Asia Pacific region.

'A National Government I lead will work hard to create and embrace those opportunities to improve the lives of all New Zealanders.”

Sounds like a lot of rhetoric to me.We are getting sold to overseas interest with this Government in housing and privatisation.
