Tauranga City Council project manager Helmut Marko says contractors Marra Construction will begin preparing the site for demolition from Monday.

Fencing and hoardings will be in place around the construction site, including part of the Village Green.

The pathway to and from Lincoln Terrace will be closed and the footpath in front of the library on Greerton Road will be diverted during the redevelopment.

The car parks in front the library on Greerton Road will also be closed. The band rotunda on the Village Green will be removed and put in storage during the redevelopment.

The community will be able to watch the demolition and construction online, thanks to a time lapse camera. The time lapse camera will be available for viewing on council's website www.tauranga.govt.nz/greertonlibrary from July 21.

The new 960m2 Greerton Library will be more than double the size of the present library and will be a modern, engaging and vibrant facility for the Greerton community.

In addition to community library services, the new library will include a community meeting room and Learning Centre. Completion is currently scheduled for May 2016.

Council approved $3.45 million of funding for a 900m2 building – double the size of the present library – in its Annual Plan 2014/15.

The Marra contract, worth $2.7m, was signed in February, following registration of interest in June 2014 and a pre-qualified tender process.

In June, Council received $200,000 funding from the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board, enabling it to extend the new building by an additional 60m2 and make the Learning Centre and meeting room bigger.

Greerton Library has temporarily relocated to 1334 Cameron Road during the library redevelopment.

How does that work - the cost is said to be $3.45m yet the quote obtained that was not in accordance with the approved tender process Council rules was $2.7m which presumably includes the additional 60m2.So the saving is $750,000 which will not need to be spent on the library?.All the hype for something that should never have been approved is nauseating.
