Family dog bites toddler

A Te Puke toddler remains in hospital with facial injuries after being bitten by a dog at a family home.

The three-year-old boy was bitten on the face about 1pm Monday at an address on the fringe of Te Puke.

Mount Maunganui St John were called to the incident and the boy was taken to Tauranga Hospital. He was later transferred to Waikato Hospital.

A Waikato District Health Board says the boy is in a stable condition in a ward.

Bay of Plenty Police communications manager Kim Perks confirms police are investigating but the case is still in its infancy.

Kim says the boy was bitten by a pitbull-mastiff cross dog that belonged to the family.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council communications manager Frank Begley told SunLive council's animal services staff seized a male dog believed to be about nine-years-old following the incident.

'The dog is not registered in the Western Bay. Its owner is thought to be from the Waikato area.”

Further information is expected to be released by police later this week.
