A 20-year-old Tauranga man is in hospital with serious head injuries following a crash in Whakamarama overnight.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 2, near Te Karaka Drive, just after 11.30pm.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing Sergeant Nigel Ramsden understands two men were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

He says the passenger was taken to Tauranga Hospital's Intensive Care Unit with serious head injuries. 'The driver walked away uninjured.”

He is unsure how the crash happened.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesperson says an appliance from Omokoroa attended the crash. She says no one was trapped inside the vehicle.

Tauranga Hospital communications advisor James Fuller says the 20-year-old Tauranga man remains in a critical condition at Tauranga Hospital this morning.
