If you want to get your fill of the much loved Kiwi band then make sure you're down at the Mauao Performing Arts Centre in Mount Maunganui next Saturday, July 11.

For the gig they'll be supported by the immensely talented Alice Sea and this is sure to be a gig with great vibes, intoxicating rhythms and a groove that'll send you packing with a smile on your face.

Guitarist and vocalist Joel Shadbolt says the boys are extremely excited to be bring Batucada Sound Machine – or B2KDA for short – to town.

'We're really looking forward to this gig man especially Paaka Davis [vocalist] and myself,” says Joel. 'I grew up in Tauranga and Paaka lives there at the moment so it'll be great to perform for the fans and our family and friends.

'There's also been a few changes to B2KDA's line-up so it'll be the first time we've all played together in Tauranga. It's kind of like a new chapter for the band.”

But it's not been all rosy, for Joel that is, who'll be stepping off guitars for this gig following a recent hand injury.

'I accidentally cut some tendons in one of my hands, so trying to play guitar is hilarious,” he says wryly. 'Luckily the pianist Guy Harrison is quite talented, he can play guitar and trumpet, he's a bit of a musical freak actually.”

Joel explains ‘batucada' is an Afro-Latin word that can be translated into English as ‘percussion jam'.

The band started out around 2003 as five drummers who would meet regularly at a bar in Auckland for a 'freestyling polyrhythmic workout, taking Brazilian beats as their starting point”.

As time passed other musicians like guitarists, trumpeters and singers would pop down and join in on the fun. And thus lies the genesis of B2KDA.

Over the years there's been line-up changes and Joel says the current eight-piece band have been working together for the past year or so.

'There's Paaka, Guy and myself, plus drummer Adam Tobeck and percussionist Dean Rodrigues. There's only a few of the original members but the core and heart of Batucada is still very much there.”

Joel says this upcoming gig will be one of two the band plays, with them appearing on stage at the Kings Arms in Auckland the night before.

They'll also be appearing on TVNZ's show Good Morning which he says should be a fun experience.

'For the Mauao gig we're gonna be performing a 90 minutes set and it'll feature a good mix of the band's big tunes plus some new tracks too which will be awesome.

'I've really familiar with Batucada's early work and one of the big tunes ‘Tremblin', that's a tune I'm really looking forward to performing on the night.”
