Bra-zen trip to Waihi

Well known sports radio and television broadcaster Phil Gifford couldn't stop himself from getting a little bra-zen during a recent trip to Waihi Beach.

While visiting his old stomping grounds Phil got into the swing of the upcoming Arty Bra Show taking place at the Waihi Beach Westpac Community Centre on Saturday, July 11.

Hosted by Protect Karangahake, proceeds from this show will be used to undertake research into the ecological importance of the Karangahake Gorge.

The night will feature male models showing off wearable art bras that fall under categories such as ‘fluoro frenzy', ‘naughty nanas', ‘zoo visit' and ‘steampunk'.

The artworks will be judged by celebrities Bill Ward, Shona Laing, Sarah Spicer, while former Miss NZ Drag Queen Miss Crystal Chandelier will be the evening's master of ceremonies.

Phil has just published his newest book Loose Amongst the Legends which brings together the best tales from his colourful media career.

'I'm very happy to support this year's cause,” says Phil.

'I have a mass of fantastic memories from my high school years at Waihi College of what I believe is an area as beautiful as any in the world: The Karangahake Gorge. The people behind Arty Bra this year are doing a great thing protecting such a natural treasure.”

While Phil's super macho rugby loving creation ‘Loosehead Len' is just doing this 'so he can wear woman's clothes.”

Show organiser Sabine Hartmann says the artists are all very busy putting the finishing touches on their colourful bras.

Ticket sales to date are going very well and Sabine is not sure if they will have any tickets left over for door sales on the night.

'It will be a great fun night out and the tickets are a snap at only $15 including the show, a light supper and live dance music afterwards. There will also be an auction of some of the bras.

Other food and bar sales, including eftpos facilities, will be available on the night, says Sabine.

The Arty Bra Show is on at the Waihi Beach Westpac Community Centre on Saturday, July 11, from 6.30pm. This is an R18 event. For more information visit: www.protectkarangahake.org.nz

Tickets cost $15 and are available from The French Shop in Waihi Beach, Waihi Stationery, Budda Lounge in Whangamata, Positive Paeroa and the Te Aroha Organic Health Shop.
