Papamoa water supply problems

Papamoa residents should wake to a plentiful water supply this morning following a night of water problems.

Water was reduced to very low pressure or out altogether for most of the Papamoa area from around 10.30pm.

Tauranga City Council says there is likely to be a lot of air in the system as the supply gets back to normal.

'Water may appear milky or discoloured at first. Residents are advised to run a cold tap for several minutes to until the water clears,” says a council spokesperson.

Problems with the supply began yesterday evening after a fault with the pressure-reducing valve that feeds Papamoa.

This valve is effectively a gate that slows down the high-pressure water supply coming from the Joyce Road Water Processing Plant.

'Under normal conditions that problem could have been managed by supplying Papamoa with water from the Poplar Lane reservoir,” says council.

'A separate electrical problem with a valve control at the reservoir meant that water could not be released from the reservoir into the system.”

At 1am there was still another few hours of work anticipated before the Poplar Lane reservoir valve was expected to be working again.

Water can be then supplied to Papamoa from the reservoir while the pressure-reducing valve repair is completed.

SOME of us want a council that concentrates on and spends our money on, the CORE BUSINESS of running a city. IF AND WHEN we become the best city in New Zealand for water reticulation and other essential services, we can then spend money on the "I WISH" projects such as Museums, Art Galleries, NEW libraries and cycleways, GRRRRR. I see that the brand spanking NEW skateboarding ramps at Blake Park has been trashed and resurfaced again in the last week. I wonder at the cost for this and how long before it is quietly done again??

PAPAMOA LET DOWN AGAIN

I totally agree with the below comments regards Council and Steve Morris. Councils so called 24/7 switchboard last night was down, NO emergency backup in place. Councils Web site NOT even updated to advise on water Shutdown. If there was a Major Fire NO Hydrants were working for hours last night yes, Fire trucks do carry a limited supply but would be unable to refill. When contacted last night even the N.Z. Fire Service Tauranga Central Fire Station had received a number of calls from residents unable to contact Council and the Fire Service stated that they did not even have a backup emergency contact number for No water in Fire Hydrants. Come on Steve, get the backups systems addressed urgently and look after Papamoa and YES Steve, please look after your Papamoa constituents who do NOT even have a safe cycling lane along Papamoa Beach Road for cyclists.

At least the Papamoa water tastes like water. Tauranga water often tastes like a public pool after a hot summers day...no kidding!

On to it.

My phone was worked well last night and I called our GM-infrastructure who immediately send crews to work with a majority of Papamoa back online with water re-routed in 70 minutes. The call-centre needs to have a phone message like trustpower does when there is a fault. I sent messages through the Papamoa Facebook Page that I admin (6,445 likes) http://www.facebook.com/Papamoa.NewZealand - suggest you go there as well as TCC's Facebook which worked last night too. Also spoke to residents and contractors on-street at 10:45pm and a resident at my door at 11:30pm. There is work to be done on improving our systems. 20 years ago it would have taken a day, not 70 minutes. @JimmyEhu - I'm pleased you now care about Papamoa given you decided not to turn up and speak at the "meet the candidates" meeting as a candidate because it "was only Papamoa" aye Mike

have you slipped of your medication, Papamoa is only one part of the city, and are you sure you are aware of the technological advancements made over the last 20years, and who the hell is Mike???

If you read the article you will see Papamoa was the only area affected by the outage last night or did you have trouble with your water too?
