A Whangamata man has been flown to Waikato Hospital after suffering a serious medical condition overnight.

The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter was dispatched to Whangamata at 9:30pm where a 76-year-old man suffered a condition requiring hospital treatment.

Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter pilot Todd Dunham says the man was stabilised by St John paramedics before being flown to Waikato Hospital.

The helicopter was called due to the location and distance from the required hospital.
