Seaside writers win big

Mount Maunganui and Papamoa writers have won national prizes in a Paper Plus' national story writing competition.

Mount Primary School pupil Oscar Kelly is the national winner and Rosie Tao Warren from Te Akau ki Papamoa School has won the regional prize.

The country's largest stationery and book retailer, Paper Plus invited year five students across New Zealand to enter its Ginormous Imagination Story Competition, to come up with a story about the new paper Plus character, Blurb.

Oscar's story about Blurb – The Adventures of Super Blurb – has won him $1000 Paper Plus voucher and a $2000 voucher for his school.

'I loved this super story,” says one of the judges, author Stacy Gregg. 'Oscar deploys a clever writer's tool – subverting the moment time and again as Super Blurb fails to save the day and eats all the ice creams himself. Writing humour is hard but Oscar Kelly pulls it off.”

Author co-judge, and Paper Plus book ambassador Kerre McIvor says Rosie's story is full of lovely literary references.

'Clearly Rosie loves reading and books. Her story is beautifully constructed.”

Rosie's tale – What's the Story, Blurb? – has bagged her a $500 in-store voucher and $700 for her school.

Oscar collected his prize and certificate in the Mount Maunganui Paper Plus store on Monday, and Rosie collected her prize from Paper Plus Papamoa.

Entrants were asked to put pen to paper and imagine what Blurb did before he joined Paper Plus. 'Blurb is a cuddly, green, loveable character with a very big imagination,” says Paper Plus Group Marketing Manager, Lyle Hastings.

'We were very impressed with what the students produced and would like to congratulate all the finalists on their stupendous imaginations.”
