Science board appointments

Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce today announced a number of board appointments and reappointments.

Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand Ltd (REANNZ) deputy chair Jim Donovan will take over as the new Chair from 1 July. REANNZ is the Crown-owned company that owns and operates New Zealand's high-capacity, high-performance IT advanced network.

Ross Peat has been newly appointed as deputy chair, and Simon Hall has been appointed as director.

Chair John Hay has been reappointed to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's Science Board, which makes decisions on funding appropriated for research, science and technology, and related activities.

All terms are for three years.

Biographies

James David (Jim) Donovan is a previous Commissioner for the Tertiary Education Commission and has a background in telecommunications and technology. He has served as Deputy Chair of REANNZ since June 2014. Mr Donovan is also the Chair of Skylight and Advisory Board Chair of Limber Jobs.

Eric (Ross) Peat has a background as an entrepreneur within the IT industry and is an experienced Director and Deputy Chair. He retired from the board of ESR in June 2014, was previously Chief Executive of Microsoft New Zealand, and has held senior positions at IBM New Zealand.

Simon Berners Hall has a PhD in Chemistry and is Head of the Institute of Fundamental Sciences in the College of Sciences at Massey University. He has had an extensive academic research and publishing career, and was recently appointed to the board of New Zealand Genomics Ltd.

John Hay is an independent director with Dr John Hay & Associates. From 2000 until 2011 he was the Chief Executive of the Institute of Environmental Science and Research. He has held positions within AgResearch's Grasslands Division. In 2006 he was awarded the New Zealand Royal Society's Thomson Medal for outstanding and inspirational leadership in the management of science.
