TECT hops onboard skate path

A one-of-a-kind skating facility in Omokoroa is a step closer to becoming reality with another $50,000 donation from TECT.

The Omokoroa Community Skate Group in partnership with Western Bay Council, is busy working to create an environmentally sustainable skate path for the community - the first for the region.

The Omokoroa Skate Path, to be located on the corner of Western Avenue and Omokoroa Road, is the first stage of a comprehensive development at the Omokoroa Sports Grounds, with the wider design including a future playground and picnicking spaces.

The Skate Path will be part of a wider design, including a future playground and picnicking spaces to help bring people together in an active and safe environment.

OCSG spokesperson Erin Cartwright says the project is progressing very well, with amazing community support.

"We have been working closely with the Western Bay of Plenty District Council to navigate the technical requirements of pulling this skate path project together.

"We have also just been awarded a further $50,000 from the wonderful people at TECT. We are so close to fully funding stage one of the skate path - we can hear the children's squeals of delight on the wind."

Erin wishes to thank the community and TECT for the ongoing support.

"It is only with the help and support from our fantastic community and organisations like TECT that we can develop these much needed play spaces for our children."

The group needs to raise $35,000 to begin stage one of the project. A Wheelie Good Bingo Night is being organised for August 14 at the Omokoroa Hall. Raffles are being created with donated skate goods from The Goodroom, The Mt Surf Shop, and path designer Rich Landscapes.

They are also looking for major sponsors.

"We have a number of fundraising events planned and would promote any sponsors widely through these events and publicity. We are working with the council on the possibility of recognition of major contributors through naming of skate features and on signs," says Erin.

Anyone looking to support the project or become a sponsor can contact Erin; erinandste@gmail.com or phone 548 0481.
