Kiwi ingenuity hits the road

From spruced up trolleys that have sat in grandad's shed for a few years, to mobility scooters transformed into hot rods – Kiwi ingenuity is at its best this morning as children race home-made trolleys around The Lakes Boulevard.

Families have been busy building trolleys with the children to race in the Coast Kids' Annual Family Trolley Derby today.

Coast Kids owner Carla Blockley says about 20 trolleys have been entered in today's races, with parents and grandparents offered the chance to channel their inner youth and get behind the wheels in a special race at the end.

'There's heaps of trolleys and lots of good Kiwi initiative. If you imagine two bicycles and you joined them together with a seat in the middle, that's what one of them looks like.

'Another one looks like a little hot rod, it's a mobility scooter that they've put a hot rod body on it which is really cool.”

Carla says the annual trolley derby is a great way to have fun and make some family memories along the way.

Racers will be treated to a free sausage sizzle afterwards, with lots of great prizes and trophies up for grabs.
