Update 11.28AM: Firefighters are attending a scrub and gorse fire in Welcome Bay.
Smoke can be seen from the water's edge near Welcome Bay. Photos: supplied.
Emergency services were called to the blaze at Ranginui Rd just before 10.30am.
Fire Service Northern Communications Centre shift commander Steve Smith says the fire is burning 75m by 50m of scrub and gorse.
He says Greerton Fire Brigade is in attendance, with two water pumps and a tanker used to put out the fire.
A reporter at the scene says it looks like the fire is close to the water's edge and smoke can be seen billowing into the air.
'It looks like a pretty big fire.”
A nearby resident says the fire started with a reasonable amount of smoke before the flames appeared to get out of hand fairly quickly with the wind.
"The flames were higher than the house in parts. I couldn't smell anything as it was blowing in a different direction but we watched it from our house."
