Playoff race heats up

A chance to upset an unbeaten Te Puke Sports could prove the catalyst for Greerton Marist making a charge for the Bayfair Baywide Club Rugby playoffs with three round remaining.

Currently sitting in sixth spot on the ladder with 21 points, Greerton can't catch Tauranga Sports and Te Puke Sports but will be pushing hard in the battle for the final two spots alongside Mount Maunganui, Rotoiti and Whakarewarewa.

They have had a mixed season this year, performing well over the past couple of weeks, but will be hoping to upset favourites Te Puke and secure a win at home.

However last weekend witnessed them go down to an inform Tauranga Sports side and the draw does not get any easier for them facing 2014 winners Mount Maunganui the following week.

Te Puke premier coach Craig Jeffries is very aware of the threat Greerton presents as they will be looking to gain all the competition points they possibly can out of the next three weeks.

'We have adopted a finals approach to the games at this point in the season, so are not focusing on anything beyond our next game”.

In other matches Paroa hosts Opotiki at Lawson Park, Rangataua is at home to Mount Maunganui, Waikite and Rotoiti clash, fifth place Whakarewarewa hosts Te Puna, and Whakatane Marist is at home to Tauranga Sports at Rugby Park Whakatane.

With three rounds also remaining in Division One, things are beginning to tighten up.

The match of the round sees Kahukura and Te Teko set to provide a competitive and tightly contested match with both sides wanting to secure their position in the top four.

Te Teko sits in second on 31 points, behind leaders Rangiuru, while Kahukura is back on 26 points I third.

Kahukura coach Ron Preston says surprisingly the side remains in the top four following a few losses, but will be hoping for a win this weekend to secure their position.

'We will be looking to improve on last week's performance. The key for us will be winning our own ball and allowing our backs to stretch their legs and capitalise on our possession.”

Te Teko coach Mike Pryor believes both sides will fancy their chances of winning this weekend.

'Kahukura will be looking for a win just as much as we will be. Unfortunately we are down with a few injuries which is not great timing at this stage of the season. But our development squad have been training with us and will cater for these injuries.

'We will continue to play our current game plan, looking to move the ball around and play some expansive rugby.”

Other matches see Galatea at home to Ngongotaha at Galatea Domain, Judea taking on Arataki, Poroporo against Marist St Michael's, table-toppers Rangiuru hosting Katikati, and Ruatoki at home to Reporoa.

This week also sees the Bayfair Baywide Women's semifinals with an unbeaten Waikite hosting Waimana and Arataki taking on Tokoroa.

Waikite's Eliza Stephens says the side is 'pumped and excited” about this weekend's clash.

'Being top of the table and unbeaten throughout the round is a challenge in itself and now this is the business end do or die.

'The key for this weekend is keeping calm and having patience. The first half is just to find out what they have and chip away. We know they have a strong forward pack so we will do our homework in that area at training Wednesday night.”

Waimana captain Janie Kaafi is looking forward to a heavily contested game both up front and in the backs.

'We will be going out to give it everything and will be hoping for a tight game with both teams interests set to win this game looking ahead to the final next weekend. Exciting stuff only time will tell who will come out on top”.

Semifinal two poses an intriguing battle with Arataki and Tokoroa drawing 29-all the last time they met.

Arataki current title holders will want to capitalise on home ground advantage and go on to defend their title again this year, while Tokoroa will be looking for the chance to have the opportunity at the title.

Tokoroa coach AJ Purnell believes the semifinal will be won by the team that can absorb pressure for 80 minutes.

'Tokoroa has struggled to close out games when holding the lead for the majority of the game. Three times this year we have surrended a first half lead resulting in a draw, a last minute win and last weekend's 27-12 loss to Waikite.

'We expect the Arataki side will throw everything at us this weekend as they look to repeat their unbeaten run of 2014 and secure a finals berth in the Bayfair Baywide Championship.”

Arataki's Calli Turner is expecting nothing less than an intense game to ensure they can push toward defending last year's championship title.

'Tokoroa are a strong team and we drew against them after being down 22-5 at half time when we played at their home ground during pool play. We are hoping to have a much different result this weekend due to our home ground advantage.

'We've lost a few of our senior players due to injury but the remaining team is tight knit and working hard and stepping up to the challenge.”
