Winston’s eight picks for the week

Occasionally, Winston's brain is so mouldered from over-indulgence that he can't string together a coherent column. So just picks stuff he likes. He hopes you like it too.

Gig of the Week: Next Tuesday, June 30, at 7.30pm, Chris Thompson is coming to Tauranga RSA's Hinton Room. Chris Thompson is a legend, he's absolute New Zealand folk royalty so thank you to the Tauranga Acoustic Music Club for bringing him to town.

Chris Hamlet Thompson is coming to Tauranga on June 30.

Don't know him? To avoid confusion, this is Chris Malcolm Thompson from Raglan, not Chris Hamlet Thompson, from Hamilton who went on to sing with Manfred Mann.

This Chris has played in Julie Felix's band, toured with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Brownie McGhee, has released many albums and had his songs covered the world over. His heroes are Bert Jansch and Townes Van Zandt. Entry is $15 for public, local songwriters will open, and afterwards Chris promises a blues workshop/jam.

Album of the Week

Leonard Cohen – ‘Can't Forget: A Souvenir of the Grand Tour'. A second live album since the award-winning ‘Popular Problems' from last year – a song from which opens the new TV series of ‘True Detective'.

This one has 10 songs: a couple of favourites – ‘Joan of Arc', the title track – some rarities, two new tunes, and two unlikely but spirited covers. Culled from sound-checks and various concerts it's a wonderful collection, just what the title promises. And the final monologue on ageing is great (see Quote 2, below).

Movie of the Week

‘Jurassic World'. Seen it yet? If not then get along and enjoy the world's bitey-est theme park. Yes it's big and dumb but... it's got dinosaurs! This sensibly gets back to the very beginning – the park. That's what everyone wants: to go to an island park where you can see actual dinosaurs. This is a film made for the big screen.

The eventual running, screaming and chomping get to be a bit of a drag, but... it's got dinosaurs!

DVD of the Week

‘Jupiter Ascending'. After ‘Jurassic World' you might as well keep up the silliness with this absurd piece of sci-fi from the people who once ruled the world after creating ‘The Matrix'. What a long road down. ‘Cloud Atlas' was brilliant but a box-office plank, this did little better.

Why you should watch is the design. Forget the story of an earthling chosen one saving the planet from interplanetary people-farmers – just look at the visuals. Stunning, stunning stuff.

Food of the Week

Rocky Nut Road Snickers. I'm not one to encourage obesity but if that's what it takes to enjoy something as good as this then all I can say is Hell Yeah! Easily leaping to the head of the current queue of 'gimmick” bars that make something else into a chocolate slab (L&P, the new Jelly Tip, etc) this is good enough to stand on its own. Better than either rocky road or Snickers!

Drink of the Week

Vodka and Cranberry. An old favourite but drink it now because limes are in season. A V&C only works with fresh lime; no fresh lime, it tastes of nothing. Choose your own quantities but a squeeze of fresh lime is the magic bullet.

Quote of the Week 1:

In America, Rush Limbaugh blames Charleston's racial killings on evolution – 'If you happen to be a young kid in junior high or high school, and you're being force-fed evolution, and part of evolution is teaching that the transition from dark skin to light skin equals more evolved, what are you gonna think of dark-skin people?...I'm hearing from people that this is part of the curriculum. Well, if that's true, for crying out loud, then it makes it a little more understandable why people like this Dylann Roof guy exist”.

Quote of the Week 2

Leonard Cohen breaks down the six stages of attraction: 'You start off irresistible. And then you become resistible. And then you become transparent – not exactly invisible but as if you are seen through old plastic. Then you actually do become invisible. And then – and this is the most amazing transformation – you become repulsive. But that's not the end of the story. After repulsive then you become cute – and that's where I am”.
