What's on Today?Walking greyhounds

Rise and shine Sunners!

June 21 is the Northern Solstice and marks the shortest day here in the Southern Hemisphere.

Owners of greyhounds are invited on an annual walk around a Te Puna reserve this morning. Photo: supplied.

Because of the way Earth is tilted about its axis, the length of the day changes through the year. Today, the Southern Hemisphere will be tilted furthest away from the sun, which will appear at its lowest point in the sky.

Sunrise for Tauranga is 7.30am and sunset is at 5.04pm, which gives just a little more than nine hours of potential sunshine for the city.

With this in mind, let's gets the day started as we have plenty of exciting events planned before the sun goes down.

Great British Greyhound Walk

Greyhounds, lurchers, other sighthounds and their owners are invited for a morning walk around a Te Puna reserve this morning, in an attempt to raise awareness of the breeds.

The annual walk aims to raise the profile of rescued and retired, or ex-racing greyhounds and other sighthounds.

This year's 2015 walk is atI'Anson Reserve on Loop Rd, off State Highway 2 just north of Te Puna Village. Walkers meet at 10.30am at the reserve entrance. Parking is free.

Papamoa Polar Plunge

Papamoa Unlimited is giving people the ultimate opportunity to get ‘Freezin' for a Reason' with the organisation's Papamoa Polar Plunge this morning.

The Papamoa Polar Plunge hits the water at Papamoa Domain from 11am today, and will offer every participant the chance to win $2000 for their chosen non-profit group.
