Runners take on Mauao

The annual Vitasport King and Queen of the Mount Race got underway in Mount Maunganui at 2pm on Sunday.

Starting at Mount Main Beach, those participating in the senior category run 4.5 kilometres to the top of Mauao, 231 metres above them.

The event has been held every year since 1946, attracting those who hope to shatter previous records.

There is also a junior category and a Family Fun Run/Walk that started half an hour earlier at 1.30pm.

McKenzie Ball from Tauranga ran in the girls under 12 race.

Alicia Davie from Fielding ran the race with two broken arms.
