Nuclear energy talk next week

New Zealand's nuclear energy needs for future energy requirements will be discussed at next week's Cafe Scientifique in Tauranga.

Led by nuclear engineer Dr Hanno van der Merwe, the presentation will focus on basic principles behind nuclear power generation, its operational and safety issues and what options exist today.

His talk will also look at how employing nuclear energy requires a huge commitment by the public and their government to all aspects of the nuclear energy cycle.

Dr Van der Merwe works for Ballance Agri-Nutrients in Mount Maunganui and is responsible for developing new industrial and agricultural chemical products.

He is a former nuclear scientist and holds a PhD in physics and degrees in chemistry and engineering.

Cafe Scientifique takes place at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club at 90 Keith Allen Drive, Sulphur Point, on Monday, June 22.

Doors open from 6.30pm. Entry is $5.

Dangerous

We don't want or need nuclear energy in New Zealand! there will be enough fallout from Japan coming this way via the oceans soon enough. I saw a documentary where there is still waste leaking into the oceans from Japan!

No Thanks!

Even if the nuclear power station behaves according to plan it will create dangerous nuclear waste that has to be disposed of. Too risky to bury in these shaky isles and not responsible to ship it anywhere else. Why even consider it when we have water, wind and solar energy options?

What!!!

And where would you stick that nuclear plant. In Auckland??? Can this man and any others not see what is happening in Japan and Russia. They still have problems. No, No, NO! to having them it, here.

Sustainability

NZ currently produces 80% of its electricity via renewable sources. We could be 100% if it weren't for the market system (capitalism getting in the way of sustainability and ecosystem health). There is absolutely no reason to build nuclear power stations in NZ. Germany's plan is to phase out nuclear power so maybe Dr Hanno is looking to find new work here in NZ.

No Thank you!

Nuclear power plants in NZ? No Thank You! It's a no brainer and it would be incredibly dumb to put them anywhere in our country. We have earth quakes that can happen anywhere, and we all know what's happening in Japan.

Forget it

I am NOT an activist, but this topic triggers an passion in me that is hard to supress. I would definitely protest against this if this "discussion" leads to any fancy ideas of nuclear energy in our country
