Typical

of the cyclist mentality that is so strongly supported when there are so many safer alternatives that the lycra lovers can use and the arrogance of such a person to be cycling on an express way at peak hour with an 80 km speed limit and obviously using an emergency break down lane for motorists . Lycra must be affecting blood flow to the brain .

? Hit on the cycleway?

Not sure how this could have happened if the cyclist was using the provided cycleways that provide an armco barrier between the cyclist and the traffic.

I thought

that it was a walkway not a cycleway

You mean the walkway for pedestrians? Are you for real??? Roads are for cars, bikes, motorbikes, etc. People in general need to pay more attention on our roads.

I almost hit one in the same spot this arvo in my logging truck. Why? Cause of instead of staying as far left as they can they seem to stay as far right as they can so it gets to the stage where we can not all physically fit. Im sure Twoball can add to that being another fellow truckdriver..

So the article doesn't mention any details except a cyclist was hit by a vehicle and you automatically blame the cyclist? WOW.....if this is the case it clearly shows the lack of mentality of Tauranga residents

Off road option

Posted on 10-06-2015 18:28 | By Murray.Guy

There is an option, a choice for cyclists on Takitimu Drive, being off road and safe albeit not as smooth and cyclists are required to give way to pedestrians with whom it is shared, or cyclists can choose the smooth option which is far from safe and shared with all manner of cars and trucks doing 90kph. When we know the risks, have choices, we must accept our contribution to an outcome regardless of where the primary fault lies.

Cyclists

should not be on this road and or the bridge for that matter

Cyclist View

1. the pathway is to rough for the average road bike. 2. When riding a bike you quite often have to go to the right to dodge broken glass thrown from some ignoramus's car. How about you over weight truck drivers get on a bike and see what it is like or are you scared it will give you a heart attack...Murray obviously not a cyclist either. Before you start I also own a car although that is used by the family and I unfortunately can't afford a second vehicle so choose to cycle to work.

Bottom Line is

Posted on 10-06-2015 21:19 | By The Caveman

Takitimu Drive is a "high speed" by-pass to avoid Cameron Road for HEAVY TRUCKS an other through traffic - going to or away from The Mount (and other linked areas - Sulphur Point / Judea. Cyclists on this road have a DEATH WISH. Its bad enough keeping in your traffic lane and watching for vehicles changing lanes at 80km. SORRY but cyclists are not going to fit in the mix.

Sorry,

forgot to say, its all well and good to be "cyclist" (and I was one years ago), but! there is little thing called ride to enjoy! Riding down Takitimu Drive in the DARK in peak morning traffic is NOT going to enjoyable or HEALTHY.

Yes Bop man, we ride, sensibly!

Posted on 10-06-2015 22:26 | By Murray.Guy

Yes, we cycle, as a family and on the shared cycleway on Takitimu drive and are we not allowed to give an honest unbiased opinion without being labelled a non-cyclist. Be the way, you have no evidence broken glass comes from motorist which is unlikely, and we rarely encounter glass. BOP Man, purchase a cycle suitable for commuting, enjoy your ride off the highway, and stay alive. PS: What's with the BS re over weight trucks? All too obvious rational discussion to save lives is lost on some folk.

Solution for the problem

Posted on 11-06-2015 14:30 | By YOGI BEAR

Cars are a hazard to cyclists, cars are a hazard to the occupants, without them the roading costs would be a lot less and the amount/number of cyclists would not need them as expensively built either. Solution ban cars from the roads.

Cycling

In most countries you are banned from cycling on expressways and should be the same here. Some poor trucky is going to drive passed a cyclist one day and a combination of weather and suction caused by the truck passing is going to draw the person under the truck, its an accident waiting to happen, and the trucky will have to live with it for the rest of his days.

Death wish

Posted on 12-06-2015 05:17 | By Kenworthlogger

I think i would rather get a puncture from broken glass then get pulled under a 48 ton truck from being too far right. Peter Pan is totally right. This is an express way and cycling shoud not be allowed for their own safety!

to note the concern for the health of the victim.I guess the only things that matter are the opinions of the usual gaggle of grumpy overstayers. Robin Bell.

Drive to the conditions with respect to other road users. I think people should keep on improving be cautious courteous respectful safety first enjoy your journey slow down make sure every things right take responsibility we have to all work in together. Pay attention be aware follow the road rules listen to what the police have been saying on how we can harmoniously use the road it shouldn't be a problem.

Share the Road

Posted on 27-06-2015 13:06 | By Bruce G

There are three modes of transport. People who walk, people who cycle and people who drive vehicles. Only on the Mount people walk. The new Tauranga Eastern Link road to be opened in August will be Tauranga's only Motorway where people who walk and cycle are NOT allowed. Commuting to work on our pathways is good,n a mountain bike, but that much slower. That is why if you are riding a distance, one would use a road bike. SHARE THE ROAD.
