GTA gets Kiwi makeover

Gamers cruising the mean streets of Los Angeles in Grand Theft Auto V could soon stumble across a Pak'n Save or a patched Mongrel Mob member.

A Hawke's Bay man has made the modifications to the hugely popular video game during a holiday, inserting Mongrel Mob gang members, the Warehouse, Fastway courier trucks and other Kiwi modifications.

Andre Hema-Kani, 27, of Waipukurau, got rave reviews for his Kiwiana GTA V modifications after posting screenshots on gaming forums early on Monday morning.

'You are a legend,” mysteryfluff wrote on Reddit, while CBubble says 'Awesome dude, that's sick!”

GTAV is an open-ended game based in a fictional Los Angeles clone, called Los Santos, that rewards players for stealing cars, carrying out heists and generally running amok.

Like many games, GTAV allows people to modify the gaming experience and share it with other players. Other modifications include a gun that shoots cars and recasting the entire game underwater.

Hema-Kani said he was not ready to release a playable version of his Kiwiana game, because he was worried the businesses involved might object.

'I don't want to get into trouble,” he says.

The father-of-two works at a freezing works and was using his two-week holiday to make the modifications, which took about six hours per shopfront, he says.

His wife was relaxed about his time-intensive hobby, Hema-Kani adds.

'She's a good girl,” he says. 'She doesn't mind.”

The process involved replacing 'textures” using Adobe Photoshop and modification software. Some gamers went as far as to change whole maps or activities in the game, he said.

Enthusiasts on Reddit suggested Hema-Kani add further Kiwi icons such as L&P, pineapple lumps and some 'chur bro” dialogue for the game's characters. A Work and Income office was also suggested - an idea Hema-Kani liked.

'I cant believe I didn't think of that sooner. This is definitely going to happen,” he told user Toddy47.

So far people had responded best to KFC, even though it wasn't a New Zealand brand, he said.

Hema-Kani wanted to give GTAV a familiar feel, although he admitted there was no Pak'n Save or Warehouse in Waipukurau.

'We've just got some cafes and bakeries and schools,” he adds. 'But it makes it feel like home.”
