May’s month of building highs

Building in the Bay of Plenty continues to hit the high notes, with more than $65million worth of work consented in the last month.

Priority One figures for the month of May show building consents for both Tauranga City Council and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council were up, with the latter marking a two-year high.

The combined value of consents issued by both councils in the five months to May is the highest total for this period of time since Priority One commenced collecting information in August 2003.

Tauranga City Council approved $51.2m in May - well ahead of April's $41.6m and the $34.6m in consents issued in May 2014.

This was made up of 216 consents, significantly up on the 138 in April and slightly ahead of the 212 consents issued in May a year ago.

The commercial sector marked a two-year high, valued at $18.5m.

The number of commercial consents was 29, nearly three times higher than April's 10 and also well ahead of the 12 consents issued in May 2014.

There were three large consents in this category; a $6m addition to the Papamoa Plaza Shopping Centre, a $4.5m warehouse development at Tauriko, and a new $1.6m car showroom on Hewlett's Road.

Papamoa Plaza's addition is part of its $20 million redevelopment over the next couple of years.

After being paused in December, stage 2a is underway that will see the completion of the new facade, plus an additional 1500m2 of retail space.

The Western Bay building sector is also sitting well with its total value issued rising from $11.4m to $13.1m. The two-year high was $14.7m issued in January this year, while the low over the same period was $6.9m issued in August 2013.

During May, 107 consents were issued. In April 99 consents were issued, and 85 were issued in May a year ago.

There was another two-year high with single dwelling consents valued at $8.7m, ahead of the $5.6m consented in April. The number of single dwelling consents issued was 25 - nearly twice last month's 13.

Commercially, consents sat at $1.1m, dropping from April's $4m and also the $2.4m issued in May 2014.

So far this year, Tauranga City Council has approved $22.1m worth of building consents and Western BOP $347.6m.
