Bay man’s death remains a mystery

Police investigating the unexplained death of a Bay of Plenty man have released images of his bike and cycling helmet in the hope of piecing together his final moments.

Richard Hoani Herekiuha, 43, always used his bike to travel around Rotorua, and it is hoped the images will refresh the memories of people in the community who may not have known Richard, but would have seen him around town.

'More phone calls have been received over the weekend from the public indicating a will within the community to help police find out what happened to Richard,” says a statement from police.

'However there is still a window of five-to-six days between the last sighting of Richard and the discovery of him in the stream on Tuesday, May 26.”

His bike was found close to the track running alongside Otamatea Stream on Monday, May 25, but what police don't know is how long it had been there.

The statement continues: 'It would likely have been visible to users of the track, so this information is as important to police as sightings of Richard himself.

'His bike helmet, which has also been recovered, has a faint skull and crossbones symbol on it.”

If anyone has any information that might assist police, they are asked to contact Rotorua Police on: 07 348 0099.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.
