Rain bursts to dampen region

Bursts of heavy rain are predicted to hit the Bay of Plenty today as a severe weather warning remains in place.

A deepening, complex trough of low pressure approaching from the Tasman Sea is being blamed for periods of heavy and possibly thundery rain in northern and central New Zealand.

Periods of heavy rain are expected as a low moves over the North Island.

And the MetService admit that heavy rain is more than likely for the Bay of Plenty.

'100-120mm is expected in 12-to-18 hours in the Bay of Plenty, the far north of Gisborne and about Tongariro National Park,” says a spokesperson.

'People are advised that this rain could cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly, surface flooding, slips and make driving conditions hazardous.”

Rain is expected to become heavy this morning, before easing tonight.

In the 18 hours between 6am and midnight on Tuesday, 100-120mm is expected to accumulate around the hills and ranges, with 70-90mm possible elsewhere.

Peak intensities of 20-30mm per hour on Tuesday afternoon and evening, as well as thunderstorms, are possible.
